Run other people’s courses
After a race has finished, run its course on your own and see how you compare.

Your race, filmed for you
Checkpoint cameras cut your own replay automatically. Optional, paid for by the runner who wants it.
- Coming
Bluetooth heart rate
Wear a chest strap or watch and your heart rate goes on your splits and replay.

Film yourself, it all lines up
Upload clips from your own phone. They’re time-stamped and dropped into your replay at the right moment.
Safe for children
Join with a code, no account. No email, no password, nothing public: the organiser hands out a code or a four-letter pass, and only the organiser sees real names. School and family events are never public, not even that they happened.
Build a profile and find more races
Keep every race you’ve run, share your times, and find races near you to join or courses to run on your own. The races you ran before you signed up come with you.
Profiles comingEverything a race needs, in the phones people already carry.
Many ways to punch. Mix and match.
Geo spots, NFC tags and QR codes. Use one for the whole event, or mix them control by control: geo spots in open ground, where walking into the circle pings “Control 7 done, 3 to go” even in a pocket; tags under heavy trees; and a QR code on every tag for phones without NFC.
Geo spot: walk in, it’s done
Tag: tap the phone on it
No NFC? Scan its code
Set the course on foot
Stand at each checkpoint and press one button. The phone listens for twelve seconds and averages its position. Off under the trees? Tap the map where it really is.
Works with no signal
Punches, splits and the finish all happen on the phone. Results go up when there’s signal again.
Everyone back safe
Roll-call shows who is still out, where they were last seen and their battery. A cut-off alarm on every runner’s phone. A help button that sends their position.

A code and a first name.
My list
Each runner has their own four letters, on a printed slip.
Tickets
A personal link for every runner. Nobody else gets in.
Switch on check-in and the desk scans each runner’s phone, hands out bibs, and only checked-in runners count.
A crew with their own links
Cameras at a checkpoint, interviewers, marshals, the check-in desk. Send each job a link; the phone that opens it does that job.
Any map, or none
A street map, satellite, or your own orienteering map lined up on two points. Or no map at all for a school field.
Works with club software
IOF XML 3.0 and KML in and out, for Purple Pen, OCAD and Google Earth, and GPX for runners’ watches.
Live results
A results page that updates as runners finish, with splits for every leg.
Live map Coming
Runners on the map, with the delay you choose so nobody gets help from the screen.
TV view Coming
Map, results and the last finishers on a big screen at the finish.
Phones as checkpoint cameras Coming
An old phone at a control films every runner and uploads itself.
Interviews tagged automatically Coming
Phones nearby are recognised by bib, so runners find the clips they're in.
Your own race video Coming
Your route replayed, every split, and your clips, cut and stitched together.
Fair to everyone: beeps can be switched off so rivals can’t follow the sound, a runner can claim a checkpoint that didn’t register, and the organiser decides.
The boxes at every checkpoint, replaced by phones.
Other providers sell or hire punching boxes for every control, and software to run them. Kembara does the same job with the phones people already carry.
| Compared | Other providers | |
|---|---|---|
| Punching kit for 100 runners | Roughly USD 4,600 to 7,500 to buy, or hired and shipped for each event | A pack of NFC stickers, or nothing at all with geo spots |
| Software | Windows laptops, several programs, a trained operator | The app and a web browser |
| Setting the course | Mapping software on a computer | Walk it with your phone |
| Hosting the event | Per runner, or a yearly licence | Free |
Free. For everyone.
No card, no charge per runner, no limit on events. Schools, clubs, scout groups and races of every size run Kembara for nothing.
So how do we earn? After a race, a runner can buy their own race in the app: their route replayed on the map, every split, and, if the event was filmed, the video clips they appear in. With or without video, paid by the runner who wants it through the App Store or Google Play. Optional, and the organiser never pays.
